The Role: 

Reporting to the Lead Primary Design Engineer, the Senior/Principal Primary Engineer is responsible for developing designs associated with HV substations and renewables systems including cable rating, insulation coordination, earthing, lightning protection, and lighting.

The successful candidate will hold both technical and supervisory responsibilities whilst overseeing the development of high-quality designs for primary high-voltage (HV) systems and lead across all aspects of primary, civil, structural, building and site services engineering, supporting the project delivery including concept development and tendering phases.

This role is also responsible for providing expertise and technical authority of primary electrical engineering design for substations and transmission and will also be responsible to mentor and develop engineers within the Primary Electrical Engineering discipline, as well as lead the development and delivery of processes, procedures, and templates to improve the efficiency and quality of engineering output. The successful candidate will have a key working relationship with the business development team supporting complex projects to ensure optimal solutions by assisting in preparation of conceptual designs, estimates and project proposals and the ability to work closely with and provide guidance to engineers, designers, and drafters and you will be required to provide cost estimates for regulated and unregulated works, in a timely manner, support and develop the Primary Design team standards and processes, attend, and facilitate SiD meetings and attend site to assist in designs.

What you will need:

  • University degree in Engineering with Energy applicable focus
  • Registered with Engineers Australia – desirable
  • RPEQ registration - desirable
  • Project and Design Leadership / Management experience
  • Experience carrying out designs for one or more transmission utility companies in the relevant state (eg Powerlink, TransGrid)
  • On-site project experience
  • Current drivers’ licence

Other criteria include:

The successful candidate will be required to have detailed knowledge of substation design and engineering principles, lighting, lightning, earthing, HV cable engineering, solar design and transmission. You will also be competent with technical management skills in leading, structuring and delivering processes, procedures and templates along with estimating skills for engineering and have a vast knowledge in major substation equipment.

For this role, the successful candidate will also need specialised knowledge of HV equipment, primary design principles, Australian regulations and standards, and client specific standards (Powerlink, TransGrid).
