About the role
The Protection Engineer supports the design and delivery of protection systems across the full project lifecycle, from early concept and bidding through to commissioning and close-out. The role involves developing and reviewing designs, contributing to estimates and proposals, and working closely with project teams to ensure practical and compliant solutions. It also supports project delivery by resolving technical issues and improving engineering processes to increase consistency and efficiency.
Day to day you will:
- Prepare and review protection design deliverables, including single line diagrams, protection philosophies, settings calculations, relay configurations, and network studies (fault and load flow).
- Provide day-to-day technical support across projects, working with delivery teams from design through to commissioning.
- Ensure all designs meet relevant standards, regulations, and client requirements.
- Support project development activities, including input to scope, estimates, and technical solutions.
- Contribute to improving engineering processes, tools, and templates to drive consistency and efficiency.
- Assist and mentor junior engineers and provide site support during construction and commissioning as required.
About you
This role suits an engineer with a solid grounding in power system protection and the ability to apply that knowledge to practical design and problem-solving. They should be comfortable working across the full project lifecycle, communicating clearly with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders, and managing competing priorities. Attention to detail, a methodical approach, and a willingness to support others and contribute to improving how work is done are important.
Specific qualifications and experience required include:
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Mechatronic Engineering, that will allow admission as Corporate Member of Institute of Engineers, Australia
- Experience across renewable energy, distribution, and transmission projects
- Strong time and budget management skills, with clear accountability
- Effective teamwork skills and ability
